During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, a remarkable grassroots movement blossomed in Vaughan. Driven primarily by passionate high school student volunteers, the Newman Global Initiative teamed up with local businesses to launch ‘Pasta it Forward.’ This youth led campaign aimed to nourish frontline healthcare workers and vulnerable community members facing unprecedented hardships.
Operating out of local kitchens, these teenage volunteers dedicated their weekends and evenings to prepping, cooking, and packaging meals. Balancing online school with community service, they learned valuable teamwork and leadership skills while managing logistics under strict safety protocols. Local restaurants generously donated ingredients, while student drivers coordinated deliveries across Ontario.
Through sheer determination, this student powered coalition successfully delivered over 100,000 warm, nourishing meals across the province. More than just providing food, the initiative offered a vital morale boost to exhausted healthcare staff and isolated individuals. It stood as a powerful testament to the resilience, empathy, and initiative of the younger generation, proving that compassion can thrive even in the darkest of times.
